Elland, Rastrick & Brighouse It’s Only Me! – Befriending ProjectYCC_it's only me

Half of the UK’s population aged over 75 live alone. 1 in 10 over the age of 65 say they often feel lonely, while 50% of all older people consider the television their main form of company. Our Volunteer Befrienders make a huge impact on isolated elderly people by visiting them in their home for company and conversation. Sometimes people sit and chat over a cup of tea, or they may play board games, watch TV or go out to a cafe. We also offer a telephone befriending service where an actual visit isn’t required or possible initially. It’s Only Me is currently running in Elland (Calderdale) and neighbouring areas. For further information or to make a referral, please call 01484 519988.

You can watch an insightful BBC video clip here where elderly people talk about isolation in their daily lives.

Active at Home

Falls and fractures in people over 65 account for over 4 million hospital bed days in England alone.

Active at Home is a 10 week programme delivered at home to encourage older people to be more active and therefore increase strength and balance.

Volunteers are trained and matched with referred clients, to volunteer please contact Jacqui Smith on 01484 519988

If you are interested in taking part or referring into the programme please email

Over 50’s Lunch Clubs

Our popular Lunch Club meets every week in Batley (Thursdays) & Huddersfield (Wednesdays). For a small fee attendees enjoy a homemade hot lunch and dessert with a hot drink. Additional activities are on offer each week, as well as occasional outings. It’s an opportunity to socialise and mix with others, which is crucial for well-being. It can also be combined with our Travel Companions service to get there. To find out more information or to book a place – call either Brian Jackson House on 01484 519988 or Jo Cox House on 01924 479082.

We are always looking for volunteers to help out with our Health and Wellbeing services – whether it is as a befriender, visiting somebody in their home or making a weekly telephone catch up call. Our Travel Companions support people to regular appointments or just help them to walk out in their local area. If you are looking to gain experience for employment, increased awareness and specific training – did you know many of our paid staff are former volunteers? To find out more about volunteering with us, have a chat to our Volunteer Coordinator Jacqui Smith on 01484 519988 or call into one of our centres and pick up our volunteer leaflet with descriptions of our wide range of volunteering opportunities.
