COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS PROVIDES SERVICES FOR VULNERABLE ADULTS AND OLDER PEOPLE, THESE SERVICES AND PROJECTS AIM TO WORK TOWARDS INVOLVING PEOPLE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES AND TO HELP TO REDUCE LONELINESS AND ISOLATION.
‘It’s Only Me’ Kirklees Befriending Service
Yorkshire Children’s Centre has been awarded funding by the Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Communities Programme to deliver our ‘It’s Only Me’ Befriending Service to cover the whole of Kirklees. Our Befriending Service is available to people who may be experiencing isolation and loneliness or a limited social life. It is a free service and also aims to encourage people to be more socially active and to build happier and stronger relationships. Our Community Connections Volunteers visit people weekly in their own home, for company and conversation and to encourage opportunities to be more socially active where possible. All of our Volunteers are trained and DBS checked.
Over 50’s Lunch Club
Our popular Lunch Club meets every Wednesday at Brian Jackson House in Huddersfield. For a small fee attendees enjoy a homemade hot lunch and dessert with a hot drink. Additional activities are also on offer each week, as well as occasional outings. It’s an opportunity to socialise and mix with others which is so important for health and well-being. To find out more information or to book a place, please call Brian Jackson House on 01484 519988.
Travel Companions are volunteers who offer their time to assist a client to carry out everyday tasks such as shopping, GP appointments, community groups or simply getting fresh air! Our Travel companions are either, Car Companions – volunteers who use their own car, Public Transport Companions – using buses or taxis or Walking Companions. This service offers you friendship, company, support and confidence to get out into the community more. Travel Companions is a Kirklees-wide project, for further information, please call Brian Jackson House on 01484 415465.
We are always looking for Volunteers for our Befriending Service, if you are good at chatting to people, looking to gain experience and have a spare hour in the week to visit a lonely older person for some company and conversation, please get in touch. Befriending Volunteering is extremely rewarding and will make a huge difference to someone else’s life too. Interested? We’ll provide Volunteer training, expenses and ongoing support.
